Realtime Technical Director / Production Risk / AI Pipelines
I help realtime projects regain control before the build breaks.
I am Dario Visaggio, a Realtime Technical Director and AI-augmented pipeline architect based in Trieste, Italy. I still like making things with my hands, but most teams call me when the thing they made has to survive profiling, platforms, people, and production.
Why teams call me
Teams usually call me when a good-looking idea starts hitting engine reality.
A Technical Artist is rarely useful because of a tool list alone. I am useful when someone can point at the build and say: this is where it hurts. A beautiful scene is too heavy. A shader direction is promising but fragile. A pipeline works for one artist but not for the rest of production. A platform target is stricter than the original idea wanted it to be.
My background is broad on purpose: 3D art, real-time rendering, mobile constraints, tooling, shaders, VFX, optimization, mentoring, AI-assisted checks, and technical communication. That range helps me find the real bottleneck instead of pretending every problem belongs neatly to one discipline.
AI changes the economics of generic execution, but it makes production judgement more important. Someone still has to decide which code should not be written, which generated fix is unsafe, which constraint is real, and which attractive shortcut will come back as a bug two weeks later.
I have worked across AAA co-development, independent games, serious games, mobile production, WebGL, VR, and NDA client projects. The job changes from team to team, but the goal does not: improve the image, clarify the workflow, and make the result stable enough to put in front of other people.
The Magic Media years are the core of that profile: a long period of senior technical art work where the job was not only to make assets or shaders, but to scope unclear requests, support teams, review work, mentor artists, and keep delivery reliable while several productions were moving at the same time.
What I solve
The production problems hiding between art direction and engine reality.
Performance without flattening the art.
I tune shaders, assets, materials, VFX, and rendering choices so the target look survives the machine it actually has to run on.
Tools artists can trust.
I build workflows that cut repetition, expose the right controls, explain the rules, and leave fewer traps for the next person touching the project.
Risk translation between disciplines.
I can sit with artists, programmers, designers, and production, then turn conflicting needs into a plan people can actually act on.
Calm in the late-stage mess.
I am useful in performance sweeps, inherited pipelines, engine transitions, unclear ownership, tight milestones, and the late-stage mess where everyone is tired.
Selected work
Production contexts with real constraints.
Magic Media - Technical Art Years
A long senior technical art chapter across co-development, outsourcing, white-label production, client-facing scoping, reviews, mentoring, shaders, VFX, rendering support, and pipeline work.
Cancelled Tropico 7 UE5 phase
Technical art support for an earlier Kalypso / Nine Worlds Studios production phase, focused on UE5 materials, lighting, water, shader work, and city-scale rendering constraints.
Project Venture
Procedural terrain, Voxel Plugin workflows, foliage systems, materials, and scalable environment pipelines for an Unreal Engine 5 open-world production.
Gotchi Guardians
Shaders, VFX, asset optimization, retopology, baking, and platform-aware workflows for a stylized multiplayer tower-defense production.
Star Racer
Camera behavior, multi-layer background shaders, speed-readable VFX, and performance support for a racing game with aggressive motion demands.
Mobile Games
UI, 2D art direction, shaders, VFX, optimization, and implementation support for mobile and hypercasual production cycles.
Capabilities
Hands-on enough to fix the issue, broad enough to unblock the room.

Working style
Clear decisions, reusable systems, fewer mysterious rules.
- I try to make the cost of a visual target visible early, while there is still time to choose.
- I prefer boring, shippable systems over clever tricks that only work on one machine or one milestone.
- I write decisions down so the work survives the next handoff.
- I use AI where it helps the pipeline, but keep human approval on IP, quality, performance, and delivery responsibility.
- I mentor through clarity: better naming, better constraints, better feedback loops, and fewer mysterious rules.

Beyond production
Community, mentoring, and independent studio building.
I have co-organised Global Game Jam activities since 2016 and led the Trieste chapter since 2017. That matters to me because technical art is also a culture: shared knowledge, clear feedback, patient debugging, and the habit of helping people become less afraid of difficult systems.
I now build through the Desarius Universe: consulting for teams, independent game development, education, community work, and the technical infrastructure behind it. The goal is simple: stay useful to serious productions while keeping enough independence to keep learning, teaching, and building in public.
